Chrystia Freeland made the right decision
In addition to leaving her position as Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland confirmed her disagreement with Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau over the election gifts of the two-month GST holiday and the $250 cheque to Canadians, even the wealthiest.
“For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada,” she said in her resignation letter to the Prime Minister.

According to Ms. Freeland, and she is right, we must preserve our fiscal capacity in order to have the necessary reserves for a tariff war with the Americans.
However, this reserve is no longer there, since her government, under the leadership of its leader, has been swimming in fiscal irresponsibility for nine years. Spending is out of control and there is not even any intention of preparing a real plan to return to a balanced budget.
This is also where we find the main reasons that convinced former Finance Minister Bill Morneau to jump ship in August 2020.
Loyalty is not always the order of the day in politics, and Ms. Freeland’s departure also means that her party had placed her in the “expendable sheep” box.
Because her leader has long courted Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. And logically, he should offer him the position of Minister of Finance. The answer could come very quickly, this week.
If Ms. Freeland leaves her seat in the Liberal government caucus, she will still keep her seat as an MP and confirm her intention to run again in the next federal election.
This approach should only be explained by her desire to probably be in the running for the eventual Liberal leadership race.
Impact in Outaouais
Ms. Freeland’s choices could also have an impact in Outaouais.
It would not be surprising to see the Liberal MP for Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi, Sophie Chatel, who was one of the signatories of the letter encouraging Justin Trudeau to leave, join the Freeland clan.
It is also a good time to recall, at this point, that rumours had been circulating that Mark Carney could be a candidate in Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi in the 2021 election.
Then the rumour had crossed the Ottawa River to cling to Ottawa Centre
The scenario was that Minister Catherine McKenna would leave her post in order to free it up for Mark Carney. Which she did.
But that was without taking into account the stranglehold that Liberal Yasir Naqvi had on the Liberal supporters in this riding, both provincially and federally. It is believed that he would never have wanted to give Mr. Carney a free hand.
